Irritating singer: Prince

Recently I've heard this song in the radio and I couldn't finish listening to it because it was so annoying. He (She?) got so high pitched voice and the song is very irritating, it jumps out of rythm many times and sounds like he/she couldn't catch breath . I probably could sing myself like that.
How could he/she become rich? I think in the 70s when he/she was "famous", it was enough.
